Weston Ranch puts away Franklin at finishCougars' 5-0 closing run clinches victory, gains Winter Holiday's consolation final
By Dave Campbell, CORRESPONDENT,
TRACY — Weston Ranch High never trailed Wednesday, but Franklin High kept it close until the Cougars' 5-0 run to end the game advanced them to the consolation final of the Tracy Holiday Classic.
It all added up to a 62-54 Weston Ranch win over the Yellowjackets at Tracy High's Swenson Gym.
Tariq Muhammad (14 points) of Franklin (2-7) drained one of his three 3-pointers with 1:38 left in the fourth quarter to come within 57-54 and followed up that bomb with a steal.
But Weston Ranch's Darrin Williams grabbed the ensuing Yellowjackets miss, and the Cougars started their 5-0 blitz capped by Davon Jones' bucket with 7.8 seconds left.
"They are a tough team," Franklin coach Julio Perez said. "They are very athletic, and I wish them well."
Walter Jackson of Weston Ranch (8-2) led all scorers with 16 points and Vinnie Devencenzi scored nine points while serving as the spark plug of the Cougar offense.
"It was a good win." Jones said. "Everyone tried their hardest. it feels great to finally be in uniform and I am glad to get this first one out of the way."
The game was the first for Jones, and he made his presence known with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
"It was an ugly win," Cougars coach Bill Slikker said. "Getting Jones into our lineup should have given us a boost, but I think we looked to him a bit too much for where he is right now, and it kind of took our team out of our flow.
"I should have just picked and chosen where I was going to put him in for a minute or two at a time."
The Cougars will play for the consolation championship today at 4:30 p.m. against Miramonte at West High. Franklin will finish its tournament action against Manteca at 4:30 at Swenson Gym.

Cougars too much for Livingston
TRACY — It may have taken the Weston Ranch boys basketball team three stabs, but it finally figured out the puzzle that is Livingston High.
The Wolves’ trademark five-man rotations, swarming press and penchant for 3-pointers had propelled them to two straight wins over the Cougars last season, including a one-point thriller in the Tracy Winter Holiday Classic.
But not on Tuesday.
Not in this Classic.
Walter Jackson scored 18 of his game-high 20 points in the first half as the Cougars routed Livingston 63-40 in the consolation bracket of the 17th annual Tracy Winter Holiday Classic at West High.
Brandon Silva chipped in nine points and sophomore James Nunnally chimed in with eight as Weston Ranch improved its mark to 7-2 and snapped a two-game slide against the Wolves.
“We knew what to expect,” Weston Ranch coach Bill Slikker said. “Against Livingston, if you beat the press, you beat them . . . Unless those shots are falling. But we got a hand up and contested all their shots. There were very few open looks.”
Jackson bounced back from lackluster performance on Monday — he scored just nine points in a 70-51 loss to Beyer High — with a sterling showing on both ends of the court.
Along with helping the Cougars to a 41-19 lead at the break, Jackson also had a team-high 17 rebounds.
“He was outstanding,” Slikker said. “This is what he’s capable of doing.”
Weston Ranch faces the winner of Franklin High-Los Banos High today at 6 p.m. The game will be played at Tracy High.

Jackson nets 20, Weston Ranch rolls
By Stephen RobersonSTAFF WRITER,

TRACY — Walter Jackson scored 12 of his 20 points in the first quarter, and the Weston Ranch High basketball team's transition game gave Livingston fits in the Cougars' 63-40 win in the consolation round of the Tracy Winter Holiday Classic Tuesday at West High.
Jackson started and ended the Cougars' first-quarter scoring with 3-pointers, the latter of which capped an 11-0 run and gave Weston Ranch (6-2) a 23-13 lead.
Outside of Jackson's two 3-pointers, Weston Ranch did all its first-quarter scoring inside, mostly in transition.
Vinny Devencenzi scored six of his seven points in just 35 seconds with three consecutive layups, all on the fast break.
"When we push it we're usually pretty effective with (the break)," Cougars coach Bill Slikker said. "Sometimes we get a little out of control, though, and lose the ball.
"That was kind of evident tonight. Sometimes the mind is moving a little quicker than the body and vice versa."
The Cougars did have their share of turnovers, but it didn't matter.
The late first-quarter run turned a close game into a 10-point lead, which Weston Ranch padded with an even more dominant second quarter.
Following a Wolves' bucket at the first-quarter buzzer, Amandip Malhi cut the deficit to 23-17 with an offensive rebound and putback to open the second. Those would be Livingston's last points for nearly five minutes, when the Cougars used a 14-0 run to build a 37-17 lead with 2:28 to play in the half.
Brandon Silva (nine points) started the run with three straight baskets, one on a fast break set up by a Devencenzi pass and the other two on jumpers from the perimeter.
James Nunnally scored eight points for the Cougars, all in the second half. Jetinder Singh's 10 points led the Wolves.
Weston Ranch will play Los Banos at 6 p.m. today. Livingston takes on Franklin of Stockton at noon. Both games are at Tracy High's Swenson Gym.

Beyer hits 13 3-pointers to beat Weston Ranch
By Dave Campbell, CORRESPONDENT
TRACY — When a team makes just two of 11 free throws down the stretch, it can spell trouble. Such was not the case for Beyer High School on Monday when Brett Blom — its defensive specialist — drained seven of his team's 13 3-pointers in a 70-51 spanking of Weston Ranch in opening-round action of the 17th Tracy Winter Classic at West High.
"There were times when we got three or four shots in a row, and that was crucial because then they got frustrated," Patriots coach Mike Vander Molen said. "And then we were able to get a couple of easy baskets which gave us confidence for our outside game."
Blom led all scorers with 23 points and nailed four from behind the arc in the third quarter. Chris Teevan (11 points) and Peter Brichka (12) each added a trio of 3-pointers for Beyer (7-3).
"I'm normally not that good," Blom said. "But they were falling tonight."
Trailing 35-21 at halftime, the Cougars (6-2) had their most productive period in the third with 16 points, but the barrage of Beyer 3-pointers muted any chance for a Weston Ranch comeback as the Patriots took a commanding 51-37 lead into the final frame.
"It's as if they just started feeling it," Cougars coach Bill Slicker said. "No matter what they were throwing up, it was going in.
"I kind of got on the kids early on for not getting a hand up, but even after we got a hand up they were still making them. It didn't matter what defense we were in, they just kept knocking them down."
James Nunnally and Walter Jackson each had nine points for Weston Ranch followed closely by teammates Vinnie Devencenzi and Darrin Williams with eight each.
Williams and Khiry Thomas led all rebounders with six each.

Beyer shoots past Weston Ranch
TRACY — Forget the North Pole, Beyer High’s varsity boys basketball team is enjoying their winter season with warm temperatures in three-point land.
The Patriots could not miss from beyond the arc in a 70-51 blowout of Weston Ranch.
Beyer hit 13 three’s and 12 field-goals en route to a first round victory at the Winter Holiday Basketball Classic at West High on Monday.
“I think they got us into a funk with those three’s, it really took the kids right out of the game,” Weston Ranch coach Bill Slikker said. “You could just see their heads sink every time they hit one.”
Beyer was up 35-21 at the half, but came out swinging.
The team scored 26-points and dropped seven three-balls to collect a lead Weston Ranch could not respond to.
Brett Blume dropped in four of his seven three’s in the third quarter, eventually leading Beyer with 23 points.
Weston Ranch saw quality bench time and fair production in the fourth quarter, the Cougars winning a 14-9 battle.
Eleven Weston Ranch players made it to the scoreboard, Darrin Williams and Vinnny Devencenzi leading the way with eight a-piece while Walter Jackson put up nine.
Mic’ael Thomas and Daniel Brown added five while Sam Wilson scored four and James Nunnally six.
Weston Ranch committed 20 fouls, including the first five of the game.
“I have got to tip my hat to Beyer for the way they played,” Slikker said. “They were on fire.”
The Patriots success with outside shooting destroyed the Cougars’ zone defense, Beyer often making up to five or six passes before draining a trey.
The quick movement left the Weston Ranch defense exhausted and defeated.
Beyer sunk one long-ball at the buzzer ending the third quarter, allowing the team to enter the fourth with a 63-42 advantage. Devencenzi scored five and Wilson four in a desperate period, but the bench was summoned fairly soon.
The Patriots will move on to face Samuel Hancock in the winners bracket at 6 p.m. today.
The Stockton school easily defeated Livingston in their opening match.
Weston Ranch will play Livingston at 3 p.m. at West today.

Cougars top Soquel
SOUTH TAHOE — The Weston Ranch basketball team met with Soquel high of Santa Cruz in the Viking Classic Tournament in Lake Tahoe Friday.
The Cougars took this contest to an extra period of overtime with Soquel where they earned a hard fought 44-40 victory.
“We battled tonight,” said coach Bill Slikker.
Despite Weston Ranch opening up the game with very little intensity, and being 6,500 feet in the air, the Cougars still managed to run away the win.
Weston Ranch is now (2-1) on the year and are setting up to face Wooster high of Reno today. The Cougars trailed 16-19 at the break and were now looking for some sort of spark to begin the third quarter.
“I told them they could suck it up and finish it or they could go home,” said coach Slikker.
Walter Jackson of Weston Ranch led the Cougar’s scoring attack with 13 points while Michael Thomas contributed 12 points to the total.
Both the third and fourth quarter concluded with the score all even, but the Cougars had different plans for the overtime period’s conclusion.
“We didn’t come up here to just go through the motions,” said coach Slikker.
Weston Ranch’s inability to close out the game in the fourth quarter was partially due to the Cougars failing to convert on three free throw attempts in the game’s final regulation period.
James Nunnally had six points during the contest while Jackson and Thomas also played significant roles in this win for Weston Ranch. The Cougars were able to hold Soquel to just three points of offense in overtime.
“In the second half we turned it around,” said coach Slikker.
Weston Ranch plays Wooster in the tournament’s consolation match.
Freshman
The Cougars beat Valley Oak League foe, Sonora with a 40-33 score on Friday.
The team scored 20 in each half, big help coming from Jashune Stokes, namely his 14 points.
Casey Stephens added nine while Chris Durante scored seven.
The win was a nice bounce-back from the teams’ 57-39 loss to Argonaut on Thursday.
“It was a 180 degree turn-a-round,” Weston Ranch coach Ryan Tarr said. “We played real well on defense.”
