Weston Ranch puts away Franklin at finishCougars' 5-0 closing run clinches victory, gains Winter Holiday's consolation final
By Dave Campbell, CORRESPONDENT,
TRACY β€” Weston Ranch High never trailed Wednesday, but Franklin High kept it close until the Cougars' 5-0 run to end the game advanced them to the consolation final of the Tracy Holiday Classic.
It all added up to a 62-54 Weston Ranch win over the Yellowjackets at Tracy High's Swenson Gym.
Tariq Muhammad (14 points) of Franklin (2-7) drained one of his three 3-pointers with 1:38 left in the fourth quarter to come within 57-54 and followed up that bomb with a steal.
But Weston Ranch's Darrin Williams grabbed the ensuing Yellowjackets miss, and the Cougars started their 5-0 blitz capped by Davon Jones' bucket with 7.8 seconds left.
"They are a tough team," Franklin coach Julio Perez said. "They are very athletic, and I wish them well."
Walter Jackson of Weston Ranch (8-2) led all scorers with 16 points and Vinnie Devencenzi scored nine points while serving as the spark plug of the Cougar offense.
"It was a good win." Jones said. "Everyone tried their hardest. it feels great to finally be in uniform and I am glad to get this first one out of the way."
The game was the first for Jones, and he made his presence known with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
"It was an ugly win," Cougars coach Bill Slikker said. "Getting Jones into our lineup should have given us a boost, but I think we looked to him a bit too much for where he is right now, and it kind of took our team out of our flow.
"I should have just picked and chosen where I was going to put him in for a minute or two at a time."
The Cougars will play for the consolation championship today at 4:30 p.m. against Miramonte at West High. Franklin will finish its tournament action against Manteca at 4:30 at Swenson Gym.
