SOUTH TAHOE — The Weston Ranch basketball team met with Soquel high of Santa Cruz in the Viking Classic Tournament in Lake Tahoe Friday.
The Cougars took this contest to an extra period of overtime with Soquel where they earned a hard fought 44-40 victory.
“We battled tonight,” said coach Bill Slikker.
Despite Weston Ranch opening up the game with very little intensity, and being 6,500 feet in the air, the Cougars still managed to run away the win.
Weston Ranch is now (2-1) on the year and are setting up to face Wooster high of Reno today. The Cougars trailed 16-19 at the break and were now looking for some sort of spark to begin the third quarter.
“I told them they could suck it up and finish it or they could go home,” said coach Slikker.
Walter Jackson of Weston Ranch led the Cougar’s scoring attack with 13 points while Michael Thomas contributed 12 points to the total.
Both the third and fourth quarter concluded with the score all even, but the Cougars had different plans for the overtime period’s conclusion.
“We didn’t come up here to just go through the motions,” said coach Slikker.
Weston Ranch’s inability to close out the game in the fourth quarter was partially due to the Cougars failing to convert on three free throw attempts in the game’s final regulation period.
James Nunnally had six points during the contest while Jackson and Thomas also played significant roles in this win for Weston Ranch. The Cougars were able to hold Soquel to just three points of offense in overtime.
“In the second half we turned it around,” said coach Slikker.
Weston Ranch plays Wooster in the tournament’s consolation match.
Freshman
The Cougars beat Valley Oak League foe, Sonora with a 40-33 score on Friday.
The team scored 20 in each half, big help coming from Jashune Stokes, namely his 14 points.
Casey Stephens added nine while Chris Durante scored seven.
The win was a nice bounce-back from the teams’ 57-39 loss to Argonaut on Thursday.
“It was a 180 degree turn-a-round,” Weston Ranch coach Ryan Tarr said. “We played real well on defense.”
