Slikker named coach of the year, Spinks MVP

Gaining a Valley Oak League championship in his first year with seniors was an accomplishment not ignored by Bill Slikker’s peers.The Weston Ranch High second-year varsity basketball coach was named the 2006 All League coach of the year, leading the Cougars to a 10-2 VOL season, co-championship with Sonora and 20-6 overall finish.“It’s an honor because it’s our first graduating class and I had high expectations,” Slikker said. “You can only win if you have good players and I give them all the credit.”

East Union senior point guard Steffen Spinks was voted the VOL MVP for the second consecutive year, leading the Lancers to the postseason, and an 8-4 league finish.Spinks proved he deserved it, averaging 17 points a game, 5.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.5 steals.

The first team was packed with talent, including Weston Ranch senior point guard Davon Jones, Manteca forward senior Garret Tolman and Sierra’s senior, Michael Elder.

Juniors, Walter Jackson and Vinny Devincenzi of Weston Ranch were named to the second team while East Union senior Eric Brown was nominated as well.Many local’s were given honorable mention status, including East Union senior’s Jordan McDaniel and Ryan Fisher. Manteca senior Alex Pahl was named, as was junior Aaron Gonzalez of Sierra and sophomore James Nunnally of Weston Ranch.Since the All League system is an offensive-geared structure, the VOL also released an All League defensive team.Senior, Sam Wilson of Weston Ranch, Pahl of Manteca and Sierra’s Gonzalez were each honored.
